The Difference Between Homelessness and Houselessness

The Difference Between Homelessness and Houselessness
25th December 2016 Barry J. Murphy

Hey, so here is the end of 2016 and it’s Christmas Eve.

Most of my friends in Ireland have seen or heard about the efforts at Apollo House for the Homeless and Christy Dignam, Glen Hansard and Damo’s intervention, with a huge dedicated crew behind them, or maybe even in front of them – not important. I am totally 100% behind them, but something crossed my mind tonight.

What is the difference between homelessness and houselesness? Think about this for a minute. There are plenty of people in Ireland and beyond who feel very lonely, and especially at this time of the year. Many of them have lovely houses, but no homes.

What is a home? A home is a place of tolerance, love, compassion, understanding and interactive communication.

The bottom line is that if we could marry (not literally) the people who are houseless with the people that are homeless (and not just at Christmas), we might well find a much needed long term solution for both parties, with very uplifting consequences for all!

I wish all of my friends and most of my acquaintances a very peaceful and loving 2017.
